Once engaged, the search firm should execute with a sense of urgency the procedure outlined in the engagement stage. Clearly defined metrics should drive the process more than intrinsic elements. An agreed upon schedule of communication and deliverables should be maintained between the search firm and the target organization. It is crucial at this stage that the search firm adheres to the prescribed timetables as doing so enhances credibility and strengthens the consultative position of the firm when needed later in the search process. While the target organization most certainly will have expressed a timeline in the search assessment, it is the duty of the search firm to present a realistic timeframe for successful completion and then to urgently adhere to this timeframe. It is in these two areas that the value of professional/executive search is diminished to a target organization: failure to communicate consistently and failure to adhere to a deliverable timetable. Avoiding these pitfalls provides for a successful engagement more often.
